Christine Stewart is a seascape and landscape artist living near Toronto, Ontario. She has been painting for most of her life, and has always been drawn to water and beaches. Endlessly inspired by the light and movement of water, from lake ripples reflecting a beach sunset to breaking ocean waves, Christine invites people to connect their own stories to her paintings. To feel a sense of peace, an emotion, or return to memory of time spent by the water. She uses a variety of techniques and glazes with acrylics to capture the transparency, light and movement of water.
Christine earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from York University. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Education degree from OISE, University of Toronto and has nearly 20 years of experience teaching art in the public schools in Ontario and privately to youth and adults.
In addition to creating paintings for public exhibitions and private collections, Christine is a member of the Newmarket Group of Artists. She balances her art practice with being a full-time teacher.
Artist Statement
“I am excited about capturing the fleeting moments of movement, transparency and light of water. Water is always moving yet it’s also a constant, larger presence. It invites us to consider the concept of time and our place in it. As I paint, time also seems to dissolve in a flow state, mirroring the fluidity of the subject itself. Through each brushstroke, I process emotion and memory, capturing not a single instant, but the ongoing rhythm. For me, it’s about much more than depicting what my reference material looks like. Being near water creates deep, almost profound emotions of joy, peace, calm, or energy. I want to bring viewers’ feelings and memories of being at a lake, ocean or pool into their experience of looking at my art, in hopes of inspiring joy and peace.”
